This Sunday’s Gospel extract (Mark 1:29-39) tells that in a world tormented by possession, by disease and stress, Jesus responded by beginning the day with time set aside for presence to his Father. From prayer he went out to exercise a ministry of compassion. Mark appears to be describing a typical day in Jesus’ life. The daily schedule included prayer, time spent with people, reaching out to heal, making decisions, moving on to new mission territory. Communion with his Father in prayer led to active engagement with life, to placing his healing power at the service of a broken world. In his ministry to people he attacked the power structure of evil and pushed back the forces of darkness. (Bishop Martin Drennan)
